It's the most-photographed item on our menu. It gets mentioned in nearly every Google review. And on weekends, we see tables order it across the board — five plates, same dish, zero regrets. The Big Bower Breakfast isn't just a menu item. It's a tradition for a lot of Brisbane Southside regulars.
So what actually makes it good? Not just "good for a local café" good, but genuinely, repeatedly, worth-the-drive good? Here's the honest breakdown — or view the full menu here.
What's Actually On the Plate
The Big Bower Breakfast — one of the most popular dishes at our Stones Corner cafe — is a full cooked plate built around the principle that every element has to earn its place. Nothing is there just to fill space. Every component is cooked to order, not pre-done and held under a lamp.
Free-Range Eggs
Cooked your way — poached, scrambled, fried, or baked. We use free-range eggs sourced locally, so the yolks actually taste like something.
Thick-Cut Bacon
Streaky bacon, properly cooked. Crispy at the edge, tender through the middle. Not the thin, sad, paper kind.
Sautéed Mushrooms
Flat mushrooms, butter-basted with garlic and fresh thyme. Earthy, rich, not watery — the way mushrooms should be done.
Roasted Tomatoes
Slow-roasted with olive oil and herbs. Sweet, slightly collapsed, nothing like the raw slice you get at lesser establishments.
House Sausage
A proper breakfast sausage — seasoned, juicy, not the supermarket kind. Grilled on the flat-top every morning.
Sourdough Toast
Thick-cut sourdough, toasted properly — golden and crisp, not just warmed. Comes with real butter.
The test of a breakfast plate is simple: does every element on it taste like someone actually cared? Every piece of this plate passes that test.
— A regular at Table 6Why It Works — The Details That Matter
Good breakfast ingredients are easy to list. Executing them simultaneously, to order, at volume, without any of them suffering — that's the hard part. What makes the Big Bower Breakfast consistently excellent is the kitchen discipline behind it.
- Everything cooked to order — Nothing sits. Every plate is assembled fresh when you order it. That's slower, but you taste the difference.
- Fresh herbs, not dried — The mushrooms get fresh thyme. The tomatoes get fresh basil. These aren't big changes on paper, but they shift the whole flavour profile of the plate.
- Proper fat — Butter basted mushrooms. Real butter on the toast. Not spray oil, not margarine. The richness comes from the right places.
- Egg mastery — Poached eggs at MK Bower are actually poached properly. White fully set, yolk completely runny. Ask for yours and you'll get exactly that.
How to Customise It
The Big Bower Breakfast is adaptable. Our kitchen handles modifications as standard, not as a favour.
Vegetarian: Skip the bacon and sausage, add halloumi and a second egg — it's a proper meal, not a consolation plate.
Gluten-free: Ask for GF toast, everything else on the plate is naturally GF. No drama.
Extra eggs: If you're especially hungry — or just egg-obsessed — we can add an extra egg. Worth it.
Side of avocado: Smashed avo on the side turns this into a full weekend feast. Highly recommended.
Best Time to Order It
The honest answer: any time between 6am and 1:30pm (when our kitchen closes). The kitchen is serving the Big Breakfast from the moment we open, seven days a week.
That said, there's something about eating a full cooked breakfast at 7:30am on a weekday when the garden is still quiet and the Merlo coffee is the first cup of the day. Tuesday mornings at MK Bower have become a ritual for more regulars than you'd expect. If you've only ever done the weekend rush, try it midweek — different vibe, same food.
On weekends, we get busy between 8:30am and 11am. If you want a table without a wait, aim for before 8am or after 11:30am. The food doesn't change, but you'll have more space to enjoy it.
What to Drink With It
Our Merlo flat white is the obvious pairing — it's what most regulars order. The chocolate and hazelnut notes in the blend complement the savoury richness of the plate without competing with it.
If you're not a coffee person, the cold-pressed orange juice is genuinely fresh and pairs well with the eggs. Banana smoothie is also popular with the breakfast crowd on warmer mornings.
